Education and Military Experience. Mr. M. Jan Akre graduated with a degree in English from LoyolaMarymountUniversity in 1969. He was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps upon graduation, served a tour of duty overseas and completed his service with the rank of Captain. Mr. Akre received his legal education at Boston College Law School, where he was Managing Editor of the Law Review, and the Harvard Law School (Center for Far East Studies); he did graduate work at Babson College in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance.
Professional Experience. Mr. Akre has been a partner in the Banking and Corporate practice at two national law firms and the managing partner of a regional law firm. Mr. Akre is currently a partner in Anderson & Anderson LLP, founded in 1885 and probably the oldest law firm in Los Angeles. Mr. Akre serves as general counsel to managers of capital who are usually high net worth individuals, investment bankers or shareholders of closely held companies. His principal expertise is to develop and implement a specific strategic plan, efficiently employing available capital to achieve targeted personal or corporate objectives. In the course of his career, Mr. Akre has formed several banks and a trust company, documented multiple debt and equity transactions, and successfully restructured companies in manufacturing (basic to high tech) and service (including professional) and industries. He has litigated commercial disputes through trial, and has appeared in state and federal court, including appellate and bankruptcy court; he is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Akre has advised clients on local property tax issues and probate matters, including conservatorships and will contests, and has advised and restructured non profit institutions.
Community and Business Activities. Mr. Akre is a Director of the Jonathan Club of Los Angeles, a Director of Catholic Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Los Angeles and a Member of the Business Advisory Council of LMU|LA. He has previously served as a Director of Sterling Savings and Loan (Chair, Audit Committee), Seoul Bank of California and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (Advisory Council).
